Women's Health

Early detection of health problems is often the key to successful treatment. Women are encouraged to regularly have smear tests, learn how to perform their own breast checks, and monitor their weight and blood pressure. Our medical team can also assist with contraception, fertility and menopausal issues.

National Cervical Screening Programme

From 12 September 2023 the cervical screening test changed from a cervical sample test (previously known as a smear test) to a screen for human papilloma virus (HPV). The new screening method tests for the presence of HPV in your vagina so a cervical sample isn't needed. The vaginal swab can be taken by a healthcare provider or can be a self-taken swab.

If your vaginal swab comes back as having HPV detected, you'll need a follow-up check. Depending on the type of HPV detected, you might need a speculum examination and cervical sample (taken by a doctor or screen taker nurse), or you might need a referral to a specialist for a colposcopy.

All women aged between 45 and 69 are entitled to free mammograms as part of the National Breast Screening Programme. https://www.timetoscreen.nz/breast-screening/   In some situations, screening is appropriate outside of this age group so please discuss this with one of the GPs or nurses. We are happy to assist with enrolment in Breast Screen Aotearoa, or you can enrol directly by phoning 0800 270 200 or enrolling on-linehttps://www.timetoscreen.nz/breast-screening/sign-up/

Catching the flu is different from catching a cold. Influenza is a serious illness which can drain your energy for several weeks, put you in hospital or can even be fatal. Influenza is highly infectious so an annual flu vaccination is the best way to protect yourself. If you suffer from a long-term health condition, are pregnant, or are aged 65 years or over, flu vaccinations are free. Please contact our reception staff to make an appointment.

The Christchurch Doctors has a designated Health Coach to help patients free of charge with the following issues: Lifestyle counselling, weight management, chronic disease management and diabetes care. Professional and confidential support is offered to help patients address these long-term health issues and improve their day-to-day wellbeing.  Our Nursing Team is also available to provide advice on these matters, and a wide range of other health issues if patients prefer.

Maternity care is free for eligible patients in the first trimester to confirm pregnancy, discuss options of care and what to expect for the rest of your pregnancy. Most women are looked after by a midwife. If pregnant women are seen for any other medical issues, then this is not free and will attract the usual charges.

The Pertussis vaccine for whooping cough (known as Boostrix) is funded by the Ministry of Health for women 14 weeks to 38 weeks pregnant. Most adults will not have had this particular vaccine as it has only been available from 2005.  Women with a previous history of any other pertussis containing vaccines should also receive this Boostrix booster.

Pertussis vaccination of pregnant women may offer protection in 2 ways:

·         It may protect the mother from contracting whooping cough and therefore reduce the chance of her passing this onto her baby.

·         It results in passive antibody transfer via the placenta to her baby.

Pertussis vaccine for pregnant women is recommended to be given during the 2nd trimester 14 to 28 weeks as it may take 4 weeks for the antibodies produced by the mother to cross the placenta. The vaccine can be given later in pregnancy than these recommended dates, but this may only result in maternal protection from pertussis. https://www.immune.org.nz/diseases/pertussis

The flu vaccine is also free for pregnant women. Both the pertussis and flu vaccine can be given together.
